Five Poses for Your Senior Session

You’ve seen Talladega Nights, right? Ricky Bobby is giving an interview, and his hands just drift up towards his face, and he asks, “But what do I do with my hands?”. This is an age-old question, and I’m here to answer it once and for all.

Your hands are the perfect accessory during your session. They help enhance a pose, help convey an emotion, or use them to show off your skills! I don’t want you to be afraid of your hands and here are a five poses to practice before your session!

Hands in Your Pockets

This one is easy! When all else fails, put your hands in your pockets! The great thing about this pose is that it works with whatever you’re wearing at the moment. Suit pants, jeans, or shorts, it works! A few tips: keep your thumbs out and comfortably rest your hands in your pockets (don’t shove your fists as far down as they can go).

Fix Your Hair

How many times a day do you find yourself fixing your hair? This pose is a great way to get the hand moving in a natural fashion. And the best part? The other hand can stay in the pocket! Two birds, one stone!

Cross Your Arms/Clasp Your Hands

This pose has two parts because it is dependent on whether you are standing or sitting/squatting. When you are standing, comfortably cross your arms against your chest. You can do this by standing straight up or leaning against a wall or post. Then, when we transition to the next sitting/squatting pose, bring your elbows to your knees, clasp your hands together, and leave them relaxed.

Rest Your Arm on Something

Let’s say you were just leaning on a wall with your arms crossed against your body. The next pose in my flow would be to turn you so your shoulder is now against the wall. Rather than keep the exact same pose, we can elevate it by bringing the inside arm up the wall and resting the upper part of the arm on the wall, with your hand resting on your head. Guess where that other hand is going? You got it! Your other hand can go back into your pocket!

School Sign

Get the ol finger guns out. . . well, if you’re going to Tech. Regardless of where you are going, each school has a unique finger sign, and these are a perfect way to incorporate your hands into your photos! Usually, this photo is a relatively tight shot, so no worries about the other hand, but if all else fails, back to the pocket it goes!

Honorable Mention

Some other favorite poses are using your hands to play an instrument, holding a piece of equipment from your activity, or wrapping around a family member that you brought to your session!

Figuring out what to do with your hands doesn’t have to be hard. Together, we will figure out where you are most comfortable and make sure we come back to that pose often. Don’t worry, though; whatever the pose, I’ll be there to talk you through it!
