What Time Is My Session?
How to find the best time for your graduate session.
“What time is my session?” is probably one of my top five most-asked questions. It’s also one of my favorite questions to answer. Friends, my name is Chelsea, and I am a lover of light. I love how magical light is. I love how light creates depth. I love how light can take even the most mundane items and truly make them shine. I just love light.
The benefits of Golden Hour
Have you ever seen a movie, commercial, etc., with people scattered around a campfire? One of them usually takes a flashlight and holds it under their chin. From their point of view, they are just telling a scary story. From my point of view, the lighting is just awful. Harsh lighting and unflattering shadows are not the best for your session. Now take the flashlight from under your chin and put it right above your head. The exact same thing is going to happen. It’s just happening from a different direction. This would be what a session is like during the middle of the day. The sun is directly above you, casting harsh lighting, which causes unflattering shadows. Let’s not mention all the squinting going on.
Now, Let’s try something different. Take the flashlight and move several feet away from the subject, but shine the light in their direction. The lighting will be less harsh, causing the light to diffuse, which will make the shadows almost disappear. This is golden hour. the light is no longer harsh, and the warm glow of the sun truly makes everything golden. As an added benefit, some of your blemishes will even disappear!
