How to Style a Button Down

I know what you’re thinking. I don’t want to wear a stiff white button-down in my pictures. I get it, and I wouldn’t want to either! Here’s the thing though: not all button-down shirts are created equal! Your tuxedo shirt is definitely not the same as your short-sleeved Hawaiian. These classic shirts come in so many shapes and sizes and regardless of style, here are three ways to style your favorite button-down!

Sweet Suit

Before you roll your eyes and scroll on, hear me out. An actual suit may not be every guy’s style, but kranglers, boots, a button-down, and a sports coat is a great look! This look is an instant classic and so versatile. The jacket can come on and off as a prop. The shirt can start tucked and then untucked for some shirts (Mizzen and Main have great options!). Whether you have an actual suit or a suit jacket/sports coat, I love this look for a button-down! Bonus tip: the images from this look can also be used for a resume, yearbook ad, or any other PR related needs you may have.

Jeans

For a more relaxed look, jeans and a button-down (tucked or untucked/buttoned or unbuttoned) is always a win. This instant classic can be done in a variety of ways. One way to style this look is to grab your favorite flannel button-down and pair it with your favorite tee, holey jeans, and sneakers. Going for a more buttoned-up look (haha)? Find an option with a smaller plaid pattern tucked into a straight-legged pair of jeans with your favorite pair of boots, and you have a whole other look! How will you be styling this look?

Shorts

Not all button-down shirts have to be long-sleeved! Grab your favorite Hawaiian shirt, and let’s go! These fun shirts come in so many options, and are great with khakis or other colored shorts! You can also roll the sleeves up on a long-sleeve button-down to make it 3/4, and you have a whole new look that works great with shorts!

So tell me, how will you be styling your button-down?
